Let’s explore Katherine Applegate’s novels that do an amazing job of introducing difficult topics in simple, thoughtful, and tactful ways. We will explore themes and character development along with other elements of literature. Classes will include heavy discussion of ideas along with hands on class activities. Students will be expected to complete the reading sections at home. Plan on reading at home at least 4 days. They may read independently, be read to aloud or listen to the audio book. In addition, there will be short homework activities or creative projects to complete at home. Please research the books to ensure you are comfortable with the topics being discussed. (Homelessness, animal conservation, self-sacrifice, following rules, captivity/freedom of animals)
Books will need to be purchased/borrowed on your own.
Books: Crenshaw, Odder, and (if time allows) One + Only Ivan
